Tampasak Production in Bandwidth Street Magazine (Dec 2009 issue)

It's almost the end of the year 2009 and many things had happen to me. I am proud to say that I manage to find gather my guts and took up the challenge to be in videographer industry. I love it so much and my hope is that next year there will be something great happen. I love music so much and I finally I found a place where I can pour my heart and soul into my own work and masterpiece.

This month, I manage to do the MV for Andalusia Episode 22. I was really surprise to see that I got to see my face, my name and my production house name in the Bandwidth Street Magazine. It is an entertainment magazine for the Local Sabahan's Act. It is a good magazine (I am not saying this cuz they put me in the magazine..heheheh) It is actually a good platform or another form of advertisement for the local acts to showcase of what they can do. Sabah is filled with talented people and I am proud to be a Sabahan.

So here is the cover of the magazine for this Dec 2009 issue. Grab a copy if it is still available.

The year 2009 has been quite a journey for me. Next year I have 2 potential Sabahan Artist to make their MV and 1 band from West Malaysia. Will reveal the details once it is materialized. I'm really looking forward for it.

Yerp..u saw the title. Their Music Video is in progress now. It was really great and I did get a clearance from the Pengurus Besar in Jabatan Keretapi Negeri to shoot the music video there. So happy that they didn't say no to me. Will always remember their kind assistance in making into reality.

Here is the sneakpeek of the clip just to give u some ideas of how their Music Video looks like.

Anyway for the rest of the video, you guys have to wait...Till then....

Acknowledgement from a friend of mine.

It was quite an honor to actually hear someone praising your work and best of all from someone who knows so much about camera works and ground work at shooting set. I am truly honored with that acknowledgement. I guess that will be the cue for me to work even harder on my production.

One thing that is really important for me is reading. I had so much to catch up and learning in using new system and I am sensing and have a very strong feeling that I will be dealing with another different types of equipment and it will be another different level all together. However for me, the final outcome is very much important and I will make sure that will be my strong point.

By the way, yesterday I've attended KENTE Season 2 preliminary brainstorming session. Among those who've attended that session were Mr. Mark, Mr. Carlix, Mr. George, Mr. Jason Jay, another guy whom I forgot what's his name was and myself. It was a fruitful one and I am looking forward of commercializing KE and I can say this "IT'S ABOUT TIME MARK!" hehehhehe

p/s: currently doing some post production for Mr. Usal Jon Gavis. Can't wait for this to finish.

Photo shoot clips

I do not know what came over me that time that I suddenly had this imagination of how will it turn out if I do a coverage on photo shoot session. I often saw clips on tv and i really liked it. After seeing so many DSLR enthusiast posting up their end product in FB, I start telling myself maybe it would be nice if I did a video clip on photo shoot session.

So I asked permission from my friend (GOGDS PHOTOGRAPHY) if I can tag along to do a video shoot. He said it would be a great idea and I could take this opportunity to add into my collections of what I am capable of doing to show to my client next time.

So on the 1st photo shoot session, I was with George and Mailson. Mailson brought Ms. Elevetha Wanda as the guest model for the photo shoot session. Here is the video that I have done for them.

The next one is with 3 guest models (Ms. Nancy, Ms. Emily and Ms. Jacynta) Here's the video

So far I have some good response on the clip, however, I am still trying to improve it. Anyway enjoy the videos.

Updates

The Tampasak Production is officially open for business. I can't wait to get started on a new project. An artist has stepped forward and put his trust in me to produce his MTV. Will do my very best to provide an excellent production. Will show some teaser to this project once it's started.

For the past few weeks, I was called to do some live coverage for Pertisa Sugandoi 2009 which was held in Kg. Warisan Musium Sabah. From the experience that I gather, doing a live coverage and shots were not as easy as one may have thought especially when you have to do it on your own. Nevertheless, I have gained some precious experience from there.

I have here some live shots from the winner. But this is only during the heats. Will be uploading some videos pretty soon (depending on the free time I have, it's count down time for me as I am going to be a daddy soon, hehehhe.)

Last night I was doing some practice with some of the post production software. I think I did quite well..Here is the result. I made a twin of myself....it's just a 29sec clip...Enjoy

Hope you enjoy the video...See you later

Patiently waiting

While seeing people posting up their images and videos on facebook, flickr, blogs etc, I am still without any latest material to show. Right now, I let my mouth do the talking, promoting and pitching. I would like to do something but it seems that my equipment are not all here yet. I am a bit desperate to come up with something and I don't know when will I be able to come up with my own material.

Is it true that you need to look at your competitors just to know what level you are at? Especially in this line of industry. I am figuring out what made me jumped into this industry? Nowadays I found so many contradictions within me. Deep inside my being, I want to do this for the sake of loving and learning more about videography and how I can come up with an inspiring videos that could touch thousands of heart that awaits for the next journey of their lifetime. But on the surface, I began noticing that I am comparing myself to others and trying to be on top of what they did and wanted to do even better. I am worried that these two feelings will collide and create a fraction that will someday brings effect to my passion in videography.

Anyway, this week will be my soul searching moment where I will try to regain and rejuvenate what I think that I have lost or slowly dying for these past few weeks.

Kotobian Tadau Tagayo Do Kaamatan

Tomorrow is a big day for the Kadazandusun Murut Community. It is the celebration of Pesta Kaamatan (Harvest Festival). I am excited to see the event tomorrow in KDCA.

Last night I was with the founder of Kadus Entertainment (Mark and Davelynne...George was covering something in KDCA) together with DJ Iter of Sabahan.FM, Carlix, the winner of Sugandoi 2008 with one of the finalist for Unduk Ngadau 2009 and our very own Mr. Usal Jon Gavis. We were discussing about the Kadus Entertainment Music Festival that will be held 30th May 2009, starting from 6pm onwards at the outside stage in KDCA compound. I saw the list of artist there will be around 40 artists that will be performing. That includes all the big names in Kadus Music industry. I have the opportunity to take video for them. I have a mix feeling on this. I am happy and excited to be given the honor to do this, but also sad because for sure I dun have the stage equipment to cover different angles. Each day I dreamt about having the equipment to do great videos for whatever I am doing. I have the heart and passion to do it and sometimes when I explain to people, I felt so ashamed because when I speak I say it all out with great passion and expression, but sometimes I can't but to think whether the other party share the same feelings or sentiment as I am. Maybe I am just a little needle that got lost in wide field of grass where no one even notice. I just don't know how to convince other people and I just don't know how to show them I can do it. It is a very sad story altogether. But I just have to bear with it for a while.

Anyway, I hope I can give a good expression to all the viewer after editting it. Anyway, kotobian tadau tagayo do kamaatan to everyone.take care. Like my boss said just now after meeting. Dun have to much aramaiti....ahhahahaha..careful on the road.

Saldivianna Wences

I have the privilege to become the director for Saldivianna Wences's MVs. I remembered quite well that because of her album, I decided to go into this industry that I have been keeping away my intention for so long. The funny thing is that, when I first decide to shoot for her MV, I only have my BenQ digital camera that can record video with the capacity memory of 2 Gig. hahahha...It was quite an experience. I do not have all the fancy dollies, jib, steady cam and the lots but all I have is my trusty BenQ digital camera. I know it is a joke. But I just gotta go ahead with it with what I have that time.

Here is one of the video that I shoot last year with that camera. Please be reminded that I do not have any other equipment other than my BenQ digital camera. So you can expect the output quality. So since it is Kaamatan, I am going to post this Kaamatan MV by Saldivianna Wences. Kotobian Tadau Kaamatan Toun 2009 to those who are celebrating Kaamatan

So, as you have witnessed yourself the video that I took with my BenQ Digital Camera, you can know very well that the visual quality and the audio is very low. Not to mention when I scaled it down to a smaller size which causes some drop of frame.

Anyway, please wait for my latest development and I will soon be providing you with my latest material. Till then....

Some potentially upcoming projects.

It was a quite busy week for me and I don't have the time to actually do any posting. Punya main lama suda ni. But it is ok. I am determine not to let this blog to become like my other blog. Yang trus senyap sunyi. Heheheh...Anyway, talking about some of the potential upcoming projects for shooting, I have some few artist from Kota Marudu approaching me wanted to make their MV and Karaoke. I really hope I can get that project. Been wanting to create something that is very powerful and inspirational. In my view when I look at an MV, I will straight away set my target and set a benchmark on how far am I going achieve.

Other than that, I have contacted DFM and he verbally agreed that I will be his MV producer. I have another artist that I am in the midst of negotiating. It would be an honored to be able to work with her and do some magic onto her MV. Whoops..did i say "her" hehehhe...Yeah. She's a very talented female artist and I would really love to work my magic around her music. So i'll keep you guys updated.

I have some comments from two MV of my sis in law (Saldivianna Wences). I did explain about the situation when I did the shooting last year. So I didn't have much to offer but that due to lack of equipments. But suprisingly, I have some good feedbacks. Now I am more determine because I have the equipment already (although it is not a big scale film camera) but I know how to boost it up.

I have some good advice from blueprint78<<< He is very nice person and I really love all his work with MV. To me he is my SIFU....

Yesterday, I went to wisma and I bought myself with an ND filter. It is quite good when shooting outdoor especially with excessive amount of lighting from the sun. I am still waiting for one more lens (pls God, i hope it is available). That lens is for cross focus and soft focus. I hope i can get my hands on that. Will be great for the MV.

The basics of 3 point lighting

I often neglected on the lighting technique used in film making. Lighting techniques are very important either in film making or photography session. Poor lighting and incorrect technique could lead to failure in giving the effect that a director wants for his or her movie.

To be honest, at times when i watched the movies especially those that were produced in Hollywood or even the Malaysian Industry or local telemovie, I am quite disappointed with the lighting. I could understand if they dun have enough money but still all this can be overcome thanks to Indymogul. The best online resource for indie movie directors.

Now, let me explain about the basics of 3 point lighting.

In 3 point lightings, there are the key light, fill light and back light. The key light is the primary source of light. It is the main actor or role in lighting. Next the fill light. Fill light is the secondary light which is placed at the opposite of the key light. Fill light should only be 50% powerful than the key light. Lastly is the backlight. Backlight is very important. It will separate the subject or the object from the background.

The positioning of the lights can be seen from the picture below:-

The Key light and the Fill light should be placed to the side's of the Camera at 15 - 45% angle.

Tips on lighting for skin tone:

Darker skin requires large soft light. It is used to lit up the features of the subject.
Lighter skin requires the same but not too large on the lighting amount. Both skin tone when shooting should avoid wearing dark clothing and background.

Vertigo Effect

This vertigo effect was first used in Alfred Hitchcock movie vertigo 1958. It is also known as dolly zoom, back zoom travelling, jaws shot or contra zoom. Believe me, I have been wanting to know what sort of shot this is and finally I got to know the name of this shot. It is very effective in expressing shots that are dramatic. The diagram below shows how it's done.

Still trying to perfect this with my Sony. Hmm...i wonder who will be the victim for pulling and pushing the dolly..hehheheheh

First trial run

Yesterday my wife asked me if I would like to go to see a football match final between SM La Salle, Kota Kinabalu and SM. St. Martin, Tambunan. I was excited because of the fact that my wife was an ex SMART (St. Martin) student and I was an ex La Sallian. Apart from that, it is the opportunity where I can try out my new SONY HDD HandyCam. I took the whole match with it unfortunately the battery only last for about 135 minutes.

The zoom, focus and stabilizer were great and I just loved it. I am beginning to get the hang of it. My only regrets I didn't bring along my tripod. Nevermind about that, the shots were all stable with minimal shaking. The autofocus takes about 3 seconds when I moved the camera trying to capture the movement of the ball that was kicked from one end to the other end. Overall for starter I am quite satisfied with it. I will share some of the clips here later once I have transfered it into my laptop.

I met up with Ashley Daniel Koh, my friend just now. I asked him how was his wedding photoshoot session yesterday. He said it was great. I wanted to see his work later . For those of you who are interested, you can view his blog at http://shotsbyashley.blogspot.com/. This guy is really talented.

He was asking what did I do and whether or not I am interested in photography. I told him that I am in a different field. I am more into videos. So he said "what a coincidence." In fact he told me that he was looking for someone who can do videos for weddings. I said I can. He suggested that we should work together and come up with a package. I am interested in it. I think I should go into this as well. But of course my major field of specialties will be in music video now and movie production in a long run.

Well I hope I can do it well and gotta put something here in my blog for the sample of my work..so I gotta work on the video that I took just now during the match and make it into something impressive.

My thoughts

It has been quite a while since I have done some music video shooting works. The last time I did on Saldivianna Wences. She is an artist from Tambunan who have released her album few years back. Since then, the work just stop there due to reasons such lack of equipments and insufficient budget.

However, I am trying to revive this again project again to make sure that this time around it will be finish. I will slowly find ways to DIY the equipments for shooting purpose and hopefully. I am doing this for the sake of love and wanting to express what i feel by putting my personal touch in the final production of the shooting. Of course I know there are many talented people out there and I am not competing with them. I want to learn from them so therefore in the context of competing with them, it never existed in my mind and I will not set a benchmark for competition purposes. But I am setting benchmark of my work in terms of quality and expression.

I have recently get my hand on this SONY HDR SR10.

It is not as big or as grand as you might expect. I know some people will have have this thought that says "is this guy for real? making & producing a music video by using that?"...well i just don't care. Like i said before, the very reason why I stopped shooting last time because of equipment and budget. I feel proud of myself because previously i was using only a mere BENQ digital camera with a 2 Gig memory card to shoot 5 music videos. So you can imagine how bad it was before. Now I am stepping up another level and when I have enough, I can slowly get my hands on a more serious set of equipments. It is only a matter of time as to when I will be able to get it. But right now, I just wanted to sharpen my skills and techniques also learn from the best and pros in this industry.
